    The multidimensionality of Japanese kanji abilities

    The aim of this study was to identify the cognitive structures of kanji abilities in the Japanese general population and to examine age and cohort effects on them. From a large database of the most popular kanji exam in Japan, we analyzed high school graduation level data of 33, 659 people in 2006 and 16, 971 people in 2016. Confirmatory factor analyses validated the three-dimensional model of kanji abilities, including factors of reading, writing and semantic comprehension. Furthermore, the age effect on writing, and correlations between writing and semantic dimensions, were different between 2006 and 2016, suggesting reduced writing ability and stagnation in integrated mastery of kanji orthography and semantics in current-day Japanese adults. These findings provide the first evidence of the multidimensional nature of Japanese kanji abilities, and age/cohort differences in that dimensional structure.     漢字の手書き習得が高度な言語能力の発達に影響を与えることを発見 --読み書き習得の生涯軌道に関するフレームワークの提唱--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-01-27.This study aimed to identify the cognitive underpinnings of Japanese kanji abilities and clarify the contributions of kanji acquisition to the development of higher-level language skills based on a three-dimensional view of kanji abilities encompassing reading accuracy, writing accuracy, and semantic comprehension. First, a series of regression analyses was used to identify the multifactorial models of each dimension of Japanese kanji acquisition. These models suggest that, among basic cognitive skills, naming speed, visuospatial processing, and syntactic processing underpin kanji abilities in a dimension-specific manner, whereas phonological processing is a common factor. Second, although all the dimensions of kanji abilities predicted acquired verbal knowledge equally, writing skills on the text level, measured as idea density, were only predicted by the writing dimension (indirectly via acquired knowledge). Our findings represent the first evidence of the dimension-specific relationships of the three dimensions of Japanese kanji abilities with their cognitive predictors, as well as with higher-level language skills. They suggest the importance of handwriting acquisition during school years for the development of language skills through to adulthood. Finally, taking the seminal “Nun study, ” which suggests that higher idea density is protective against dementia, into account, we propose a theoretical framework for the lifelong trajectory of literacy acquisition

    Treatment-resistant schizophrenia characterised by dopamine supersensitivity psychosis and efficacy of asenapine

    Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) frequently arises with long-term antipsychotic treatment and accounts for a significant proportion of treatment-resistant schizophrenia. The mechanism underlying DSP is thought to be a compensatory increase in dopamine receptor density in the striatum caused by long-term antipsychotic treatment. Previous animal studies have reported that antipsychotics increase serotonin 5-HT2A receptor density in the striatum and that 5-HT2A receptor blockers suppress dopamine-sensitive psychomotor activity, which may be linked to the pathophysiology of DSP. In this paper, we describe a patient who was hospitalised with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Following treatment with high-dose antipsychotic polypharmacy for 10 weeks, the patient experienced worsening of psychotic and extrapyramidal symptoms. The patient was then started on second-generation antipsychotic asenapine while other antipsychotics were tapered off, resulting in improvement of these symptoms. Retrospectively, we presumed that the high-dose antipsychotic polypharmacy caused DSP, which was effectively treated by the potent 5-HT2A receptor antagonism of asenapine

    Isotropic cosmic birefringence from early dark energy

    A tantalizing hint of isotropic cosmic birefringence has been found in the EBE B cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization data with a statistical significance of 3σ3\sigma. A pseudoscalar field coupled to the CMB photons via the Chern-Simons term can explain this observation. The same field may also be responsible for early dark energy (EDE), which alleviates the so-called Hubble tension. Since the EDE field evolves significantly during the recombination epoch, the conventional formula that relates EBE B to the difference between the EE- and BB-mode auto-power spectra is no longer valid. Solving the Boltzmann equation for polarized photons and the dynamics of the EDE field consistently, we find that currently favored parameter space of the EDE model yields a variety of shapes of the EBEB spectrum, which can be tested by CMB experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Lurasidone‐induced hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome: A case report

    [Introduction] Lurasidone has few metabolic adverse effects and is recommended as an alternative when other antipsychotic drugs considerably increase body weight or blood sugar concentrations. [Case presentation] An 81-year-old man with bipolar disorder developed hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome as a side effect of lurasidone. Routine monitoring of blood glucose concentrations led to the early detection and treatment of this disease, preventing life-threatening complications. [Discussion and conclusion] We describe a rare case of lurasidone-induced hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome. The mortality rate of this syndrome is estimated to be up to 20%. This rate is significantly higher than that of diabetic ketoacidosis (currently <2%). Although lurasidone is considered to have a low risk of raising blood glucose concentrations, symptoms of hyperglycemia must be evaluated and blood glucose concentrations should be monitored regularly

    Lithium intoxication–induced dysgeusia accompanied by glossalgia in a patient receiving lithium carbonate: a case report

    Background: Lithium carbonate is widely used as a first-line therapeutic agent for the depressive and manic phases of bipolar disorder. Although limb tremors and hypothyroidism are well-known side effects of lithium carbonate, other rare adverse reactions can also occur. Case presentation: A 53-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with lithium intoxication developed dysgeusia and glossalgia during treatment with lithium carbonate. She also showed symptoms of a swaying gait, finger tremors, and dysarthria. All of these symptoms subsided when her blood lithium concentration was reduced to a level below that which induces intoxication. Conclusions: We present a rare case of lithium carbonate–induced dysgeusia accompanied by glossalgia. Early detection of these symptoms is important in clinical settings because they can be overlooked until patients lose their appetite, which severely impairs their quality of life

    Sensory processing, autonomic nervous function, and social participation in people with mental illnesses

    Introduction: This study investigated the relationship between sensory processing, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and social participation in people with psychiatric disorders. Method: This study recruited 30 participants, primarily women, from a psychiatric university hospital with a mental health diagnosis listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (mean age: 37.7 ± 16.0 years). Sensory processing, autonomic nervous function, and social participation were measured using the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile®, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule, respectively. Through mediation analysis, a model wherein sensory processing mediated the relationship between respiratory sinus arrhythmia and social participation was developed. Results: Social participation was moderately to highly correlated with Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile® quadrants (excluding sensory seeking) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Furthermore, the mediation analysis revealed that sensory avoiding mediated the relationship between respiratory sinus arrhythmia and social participation, consequently counteracting the direct relationship. Conclusion: A mediation model was constructed, which indicated that individuals with psychiatric disorders and low parasympathetic nervous system activity expressed higher sensory processing quadrant of sensory avoiding. Ultimately, this was associated with reduced social participation

    Constraint on Early Dark Energy from Isotropic Cosmic Birefringence

    Polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is sensitive to new physics violating parity symmetry, such as the presence of a pseudoscalar "axionlike" field. Such a field may be responsible for early dark energy (EDE), which is active prior to recombination and provides a solution to the so-called Hubble tension. The EDE field coupled to photons in a parity-violating manner would rotate the plane of linear polarization of the CMB and produce a cross-correlation power spectrum of EE- and BB-mode polarization fields with opposite parities. In this paper, we fit the EBEB power spectrum predicted by the photon-axion coupling of the EDE model with a potential V(ϕ)[1cos(ϕ/f)]3V(\phi)\propto [1-\cos(\phi/f)]^3 to polarization data from Planck. We find that the unique shape of the predicted EBEB power spectrum is not favored by the data and obtain a first constraint on the photon-axion coupling constant, g=(0.04±0.16)MPl1g=(0.04\pm 0.16)M_{\text{Pl}}^{-1} (68% CL), for the EDE model that best fits the CMB and galaxy clustering data. This constraint is independent of the miscalibration of polarization angles of the instrument or the polarized Galactic foreground emission. Our limit on gg may have important implications for embedding EDE in fundamental physics, such as string theory.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     Psychological resilience is correlated with dynamic changes in functional connectivity within the default mode network during a cognitive task

    Resilience is a dynamic process that enables organisms to cope with demanding environments. Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) studies have demonstrated a negative correlation between resilience and functional connectivities (FCs) within the default mode network (DMN). Considering the on-demand recruitment process of resilience, dynamic changes in FCs during cognitive load increases may reflect essential aspects of resilience. We compared DMN FC changes in resting and task states and their association with resilience. Eighty-nine healthy volunteers completed the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and an fMRI with an auditory oddball task. The fMRI time series was divided into resting and task periods. We focused on FC changes between the latter half of the resting period and the former half of the task phase (switching), and between the former and latter half of the task phase (sustaining). FCs within the ventral DMN significantly increased during “switching” and decreased during “sustaining”. For FCs between the retrosplenial/posterior cingulate and the parahippocampal cortex, increased FC during switching was negatively correlated with CD-RISC scores. In individuals with higher resilience, ventral DMN connectivities were more stable and homeostatic in the face of cognitive demand.
